Healthy Snacks (9 Top Picks!)

So, I think I’ve mentioned (probably 100 times by now), that I’m really loving my new job.  I really feel that I’m helping my patients and teaching them the essentials of basic nutrition.  It feels great!  I especially love teaching our group classes – the topics range from emotional eating, tips for eating out, nutrition basics and healthy snacking.  Today my class was all about healthy snacking – how much to snack, when to snack, what foods to choose, etc.

I got some really great questions from patients and thought I’d share some of my “snacking know-how” with you.  Plus, maybe by pure serendipitous chance, I got a free sample snack box from Vegan Cuts.  It’s a company that provides delicious healthy vegan snack boxes once a month right in your mail box!  Can’t get any better than delivery-style healthy snacks, right?  They also do a beauty box as well filled with cruelty-free beauty products.

Vegancuts1 My box contained a TON of yummy treats including:  multigrain tortilla chips from Food Should Taste Good, roasted seaweed from Seaweed Love, snapea crips from Harvest Snaps, a peach apricot fig bar from Nature’s Bakery, a chocolate-cinnamon bar from MacroLife Naturals, rice and bean snack chips from Boulder Canyon Natural Foods and much, much more.  Every single thing was amazing!  Dario and I semi-fought over a few of the items…including our favorite – the peach, apricot fig bar from Nature’s Bakery.  That thing tasted like the most delicious fig newton you’ve ever eaten in your life!  And I don’t even like fig newtons.  This was delicious.  I also really liked the roasted seaweed (Dario had no issue handing the whole pack over).  Salty, savory and only 25 calories for the whole darn package.  Now that’s a good snack!

Vegancuts4 Speaking of calories…all of my snacks (if and when I indulge) usually fall around 150 calories.  I personally enjoy eating most of my food during meals so don’t wanna waste calories at random snack times.  But generally speaking, healthy snacks should be no more than 200-250 calories.  They should also include some sort of protein and produce – that’d be the ideal combo for a mid afternoon snack craving.  It’ll keep you full, satisfied and give you enough energy and stimulation until your next meal.  All of the above listed items from Vegan Cuts fit this criteria, if you’re interested.

But here are some of my other go-to choices:

  • 1 tbsp peanut butter with – 1 small apple or 5-7 celery sticks or carrot sticks, or smeared on 1 rice cake
  • 1/4 hummus with – 1 cup raw veggies
  • 1 oz low-fat cheese with – 1 small apple or pear
  • 1 individual low-fat yogurt – feel free to add some fruit!
  • 15-20 almonds with fruit or veggie sticks
  • Fruit smoothie – 1/4 cup non-fat greek, 1/2 cup skim milk and 1/2 cup fruit
  • 1/4 cup homemade granola – like this one!
  • 1/4 cup salsa with beans and 10 baked tortilla chips
  • Baby burrito – 6″ corn tortilla, 2 tbsp fat-free refried beans, 1 tbsp salsa

    I got that Vegan Cuts box too–I’m doing a review next week. So many tasty things to try! I love your snack ideas. PB & an apple is one of my favorites!
