Veganish Cookbook Review + Giveaway!
Have I ever told you that I have a serious…serious cookbook collection? Serious as in I’m totally running out of space to store all my books in our tiny little apartment? According to my sweet husband, I’m a cookbook hoarder. And supposedly I’m banned from further cookbook purchases at this time. Ha! We’ll see about that sir!
I can totally abide by his rule – especially when I get sample cookbooks in the mail to review here on the blog! The latest acquisition? “Veganish: The Omnivore’s Guide to Plant-Based Cooking.” Author Mielle Chenier-Cowan Rose does a wonderful job describing her change from vegetarianism to veganism and then to being an omnivore. She definitely has a very interesting diet history!
Of course I loved the recipes in this book. But what I really loved the most was that the book was more of a handbook. Mielle put in so much information on how to be a vegan but also incorporate some animal products if necessary or desired. She reviews and provides a guide to basic plant-based nutrition, essential cooking techniques and a thorough review of ingredients and what you should look for when shopping.
Out of all the delicious sounding recipes, I found a soup to make – Angry Cauliflower Potage. A creamy, spicy vegetable soup, this was perfect for the cold, rainy/snowy weekend we had. This was probably the easiest recipe I’ve ever made! And it made a huge amount of soup! I made a few tweaks to the recipe – adding in some hot sauce and a splash of heavy cream.
But as Mielle states many times in her book, she encourages her reader to make changes, tweaks or add other ingredient’s to her recipes! She really wants these dishes to become your own. Many of her recipes are named “Follow Your Heart” to allow you a ton of freedom in the ingredients you choose. Which I think is really neat for a cookbook!
